Ocean science and technology, October 11, 1996 [videorecording] : perspectives on the past, present and future : a symposium to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Marine Physical Laboratory.

The accession consists of videotape recordings of a symposium entitled: Ocean science and technology: Perspectives on the past, present and future: a symposium to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Marine Physical Laboratory. The symposium was held at Sumner Auditorium of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography on October 11, 1996. It was organized by Robert Pinkel and others at the Marine Physical Laboratory. The symposium is introduced by William A. Kuperman. The keynote address is given by Rear Admiral Paul G. Gaffney II, Chief of Naval Operations. Gary Weir presented a paper entitled, "A Gathering at Wardman Park: the Laboratory role in fashioning the culture of postwar american oceanography." Bruce Luyendyk presented a paper entitled, "Where will the field of marine geophysics be heading? Some likely possibilities." Henry Cox presented an address entitled, "Ocean acoustics and signal processing: yesterday, today and tomorrow." Michael Gregg spoke on "Directions in small scale physical oceanography," and Larry Glosten spoke on "Floating research platforms: a designer's thoughts. Afternoon sessions included reflections on Marine Physical Laboratory history by MPL staff including George Shor, Kenneth Watson, Daniel Gibson, Victor Anderson, Fred Fisher, and Fred Spiess.
